6 UI design mistakes you should stop doing now!

I did these too when I was starting out. So thought to prevent others from making it.

The mistakes that I am going to mention here has been done so often on so-called design inspiration sites like Dribbble, Behance and not forget Instagram, that young designer are inclined to think that they are design conventions and not mistakes.

So keep your belts tight because I am sure you might have done these too.

1. Using dark shadows

Many beginners and even some experienced designers tend to add darker shades of shadows which is fine when the purpose is to add depth in design. But sometimes adding extreme dark colors such as dark grey and shades of black with high opacity diverts the attention of the user from the content.

2. Contrast ratios

Talking about design and not talking about colors. Not possible right! Colors play a very important role in adding identity, credibility, and serenity to UI design. But sometimes using the wrong colors together can take all of this just at a glance no matter how strong the business or the product is.

Using very light colors for subheadings is one of the examples.

3. You are not the user

I know sometimes we get really attached to our designs that we just don’t want to drop them, same as our toxic relationships. But both need to thrown out of the window otherwise they will do more harm than good.

Just because you love your design doesn’t mean users or clients will too. While choosing the designs we need to keep in mind the look and feel of the product, brand identity, customer preferences(just to name a few).

Don’t be biased. Keep a broad mind and open to changes. Because change is the only constant.

4. No space to breath

We think that grids are our only friend but we forget sometimes space is too. Everyone needs to breathe so do designs no matter how non-living they are, designs are the ones that add life to business and products.

Adding proper padding(especially in smaller components like cards) is really important otherwise the design can look messy and cluttered, the better word claustrophobic.

5. Too much rounding

Using different levels of rounding in the same component can take up all the depth and seriousness from that element. Putting a circle inside a square is fine, but putting a more rounded rectangle inside a less rounded rectangle might not go in favor here.

It sounds really stupid but Yes! shapes do play an important role in UI design.

6. Poor presentation

We as a designer think that our job is done when we handover our files to developers. But guess what this is definitely not true. Most of the time aesthetics play a very important role in establishing credibility and business.

No matter it is as small as putting the dribbble shot, portfolio, or a marketing presentation for a client. Presentation is the key.

Try not to do these mistakes in your next design and lemme know about your experience(if it helped you to improve your designs or not) in the comment section.
