Review - Lavazza A Modo Mio Smeg high-tech coffee machine
By David M WilliamsNot everything has to be about computing devices; when it’s time to relax or even to power up, Lavazza and Smeg have teamed up to create the stylish and clever Lavazza A Modo Mio Smeg coffee machine.
Australia has long enjoyed impressive and flavoursome coffee. Despite tea arriving with the First Fleet in 1788 and the British influence of tea-drinking dominating for a century, coffee saw a rise with the Temperance Movement lobbying for pub early closing times. Even then, it wasn’t until post World War 2 when European immigrants brought their coffee that a real coffee culture emerged, rising from the 1950s to today. It’s perhaps no surprise then that Starbucks failed to expand their empire here, with Australians finding their offerings inferior-tasting yet more expensive than local cafes. Starbucks made a loss of $105m during its first seven years of operation and closed 61 stores.
That brings us to today, and Italian brands Smeg and Lavazza joined forces to release the Lavazza A Modo Mio Smeg coffee machine at the end of 2020, to end the year on a better note. It’s a stylish device inspired by the Italian 1950s designs coming in Ivory, Black and Red colours. It is available exclusively through The Good Guys, Harvey Norman and Lavazza Australia’s website with an RRP of $349.
Tech-wise, the device contains reusable dishwasher-safe components, has a brewing time under 30 seconds, 0.9L water tank capacity and an adjustable cup rest removable for longer coffees. It also has a used capsule collection drawer that stores up to six capsules and will alert you when the drawer is full and when the water tank is empty.
Of course, the tech is one thing - the taste is another. Here it has you covered with its coffee pods boasting premium quality Italian coffee delivering an overall richer, creamier and barista-level experience. Each pod is vacuum-packed with up to 7.5g of coffee, which is slowly extracted for maximum flavour. 10 different styles of pods are available, with differing intensities and origins.
