Objective: Form a more perfect Union

Introduction

The United States of America is an exceptional example of how optimization works on a national scale. With a starting set of objectives, constraint functions are then laid out by which the country is allowed to seek the closest approximation to the optimal solution that it can. The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights define the starting conditions with which the USA was set in motion.

However, as those who are familiar with the art of optimization, it is often advantageous to re-evaluate the initial objectives and constraint functions when you find yourself stuck at a local maximum. As Jefferson said,

Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.

As such, it is important that the foundational documents of a country be robust enough to accommodate updates when the parameter space evolves new characteristics. The Amendments are an early mechanism by which the constraint functions of the nation may be modified.

The danger currently facing the USA is that technology advances at a quicker pace than our civil institutions. Unfortunately, the source code running America cannot adapt quickly enough to identify and remove sources of bias that skew the objective away from equality.

Therefore, it may behoove a country such as the USA to deploy modern code-development technology to its own source code. In democratizing the design of the country’s operating system (OS), a new version of a more perfect Union may arise.

Methods

For a living entity to thrive, it must poses the ability to evolve.

Though our founding documents were state of the art at the time of their conception, they were limited to the technology of the time. Modern text technology has the potential to turn our country’s source code into living documents with all the powerful ramifications that entails.

In the current permutation of our country’s code, the bootstrapping routines are encased in a shrine at the National Archives. While these documents are great artifacts, we should be careful that we do not descend into idolatry.

Language, like knowledge, is constantly in flux. Our approximation of an equal society should not be limited to the sub-dimension of Freedom as seen by our founding parents. Nor should we constrain our future fellow Americans with a definition of free that is sub-optimal.

If we can’t modernize our country’s source code, we are ill equipped for artificial intelligence.
